Unfair (060)
Sitting at the pool today with my friend, one of the workers started talking to us about his two month old son and his life as a resort employee. He explained that when the pandemic began, the Dominican government did not help its citizens with basic income to survive. He lives two hours away from the resort. In order to keep up with his family during work days, he has to pay roughly $2 USD per day for wi-fi. He works eleven days in a row and has three days off.
If residents here don’t work in the tourism industry, they are lucky to survive. At least, that’s how it seems from my American perspective. Life is just not fair around the globe. While I felt like handing him all of my money as he explained his life to us, I ordered a gin and tonic for him to chug out of a water bottle, at his request. As a resort entertainer, I know that it’s got to be difficult to maintain a fun composure to make privileged foreigners happy during their stay.
