Sofa! Get Your Sofa Here!
We have had a sectional sofa in our garage for almost a whole year. Not one that we set up as a living space in the garage; rather, it was our sofa for almost four years before getting a new one. We signed our new apartment lease on Leap Day 2020, as the pandemic was ramping up and getting ready to shut the world down. When stores opened back up in the fall, we purchased a new sectional at IKEA and planned to sell the old one.
We are guilty of making plans to do lots of things that we don't do, including selling that couch. Though I could blame the hesitancy of people to buy things from strangers for the first several months of not selling it, the truth is that I never posted it for sale.
Today, I got a bug up my butt and decided to post the sofa, and the loveseat that is in my office, for sale on Facebook Marketplace. The loveseat has not received any inquiries, but the sofa received six within the first hour, one message within three minutes of posting.
It was a $600 pleather IKEA sofa that was released in 2016. We bought it in early 2017 for $279 on clearance. I don't think it was a great seller and they didn't stock it for very long. It was an odd style for Americans.
I posted it for $100 and said that I would deliver it for an additional $2/mile. Once I offered to let the first message-sender come take a look at it, I realized I couldn't find the hardware to put the two halves back together. I panicked. We pulled the halves out of the garage and Mike wiped them down and vacuumed dog hair from the middle cushions while I ran to the hardware store for new bolts.
Luckily, I always cover my ass, and was smart enough to get two lengths of bolts just in case the length was wrong. We needed both lengths to attach the halves due to the difference in wood panel depths.
The man who bought it took us up on the offer for delivery, so I ended up making $115 minus half a gallon of gas and $11 for new hardware. I can take the extra bolts back, so maybe only $8. I wonder when I will get around to taking the bolts back.
Tomorrow, damnit! Andrea! You will do it tomorrow!
I put it in my bullet journal, I have to do it now.
It feels good to have the couch out of the garage and some extra money in my wallet. I have more stuff to post online for sale, and what I have posted on Mercari may end up on Facebook Marketplace as well. I guess they do shipping options now, so I might have better luck there.
